The portal axle gear train was modeled in SOLIDWORKS and analyzed using ANSYS 16.0 software to determine stresses. An experimental setup was used to test the torque transmission capacity of the designed portal axle. Load–Displacement Behavior of Helical Shape Memory Alloy Spring Actuators with Small Spring Diameter to Wire Diameter Ratios | Shape Memory and Superelasticity
A design methodology for fabricating and predicting the load–displacement behavior of shape memory alloy (SMA) spring actuators has been previously created and validated (Nicholson et al., Smart Mater Struct 23(12):13–23, 2014). However, it was found in this work that for springs with a spring index (ratio of spring diameter to wire diameter) below five, the load–displacement response of shape memory spring actuators no longer fits the previously established model. This paper explores the use of a correction factor in the governing equations to account for the plastic deformation that occurs when fabricating springs with very small spring indices. The plastic deformation induces an effective reduction in the volume of the transforming material, thus reducing the load-bearing and actuation capabilities of the spring. A semi-analytical solution to this problem is found which can be used to predict the load–displacement behavior. This is accomplished through a reduction in the effective wire diameter based on the approximate shear strain during loading. This approach is consistent with observations during thermomechanical cycling in SMAs, where the phase transformation remained mostly unhindered despite large residual inelastic and/or plastic strains, and has direct application in the design of actuators with small spring indices by quantifying the drop in actuation force and stroke.

Structural Topology Design for Electromagnetic Performance Enhancement of Permanent-Magnet Machines | Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering | Full Text
Permanent-magnet (PM) machines are the important driving components of various mechanical equipment and industrial applications, such as robot joints, aerospace equipment, electric vehicles, actuators, wind generators and electric traction systems. The PM machines are usually expected to have high torque/power density, low torque ripple, reduced rotor mass, a large constant power speed range or strong anti-magnetization capability to match different requirements of industrial applications. The structural topology of the electric machines, including stator/rotor arrangements and magnet patterns of rotor, is one major concern to improve their electromagnetic performance. However, systematic reviews of structural topology are seldom found in literature. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to summarize the stator/rotor arrangements and magnet patterns of the permanent-magnet brushless machines, in depth. Specifically, the stator/rotor arrangements of the PM machines including radial-flux, axial-flux and emerging hybrid axial-radial flux configurations are presented, and pros and cons of these topologies are discussed regarding their electromagnetic performance. The magnet patterns including various surface-mounted and interior magnet patterns, such as parallel magnetization pole pattern, Halbach arrays, spoke-type designs and their variants are summarized, and the characteristics of those magnet patterns in terms of flux-focusing effect, magnetic self-shielding effect, torque ripple, reluctance torque, magnet utilization ratio, and anti-demagnetization capability are compared. This paper can provide guidance and suggestion for the structure selection and design of PM brushless machines for high-performance industrial applications.

Design and experimental study of longitudinal-torsional ultrasonic transducer with helical slots considering the stiffness variation | The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology
The ultrasonic transducer employing helical slots to generate longitudinal-torsional (L&T) ultrasonic vibration is popular in the field of hard and brittle material machining. However, the design approach for this type of L&T ultrasonic transducer is not well established. An improved design model combining equivalent circuit theory and material parameter equivalent method based on stiffness variation was proposed in this study. The structure parameters of the transducer can be obtained according to given resonance frequency and nodal position. The model can further predict electrical characteristics and mechanical responses under specific excitation. For the preliminary verification of this theoretical model and the optimization of the transducer, finite element analyses were carried out to investigate the influences of slot structure parameters on dynamic performances in terms of resonance frequency, frequency separation, and amplitude of L&T vibration. After that, a prototype was manufactured according to the design results, and the measurements of impedance curve and vibration amplitude were conducted. The experimental results indicate that this prototype resonates at 24,920 Hz with an effective electromechanical coupling coefficient of 0.19. Meanwhile, the vibration amplitude in longitudinal direction is 8.1 μm and that in tangential direction is 5.6 μm under 70-V sinusoidal voltage excitation, which are consistent with the theoretical design and simulation results. Furthermore, machining tests demonstrate that surface roughness reduction and surface quality improvement can be gained by adopting this L&T ultrasonic transducer, compared to using the longitudinal vibration transducer. The proposed design approach was validated and this study can provide guidelines for the design of L&T ultrasonic transducer for rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM).
